Taipei in New Year party mood despite slow economy

With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, the economic slow down seems to have had no effect on the people's party mood as sales have been booming for hotels' countdown parties and stay packages, Taipei City has been adorned with all kinds of iridescent decorations, and a festive atmosphere has reigned in every spot in the city.
Christmas and New Year should brim with fun and joy. Taipei City, like many other big cites around the world, has plenty of live entertainment, champagne toasts and party favors to enjoy during the festive season.
With every five star hotel having special Christmas and New Year's Eve packages and bashes, there's no reason not to enjoy the holidays. However, the biggest event of all will be the spectacular fireworks display at the Taipei 101 tower to bring in 2008.
The fireworks display at the 509-meter Taipei 101, which was the world's tallest building until being eclipsed by the unfinished Dubai Tower this year, is no doubt one of the most spectacular New Year's Eve countdown events in Taiwan and has received global attention in the last two years.
Entering its third and probably final year of staging a fireworks display, Taipei 101 is determined to outshine all others with a NT$20 million investment in creating an unforgettably resplendent show. A total of 12,000 rounds of fireworks will be launched from the specially illuminated tower for a 188-second show.
However, ever since the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communication was awarded the right to stage this year's fireworks display, there have been rumors and speculation that it might use the show to promote the nation's U.N. bid.
After days of speculation, the message to be illuminated on the exterior of the building is still a secret, and it will only be revealed on the evening of December 31, according to a Tourism Bureau official.
Thanks to the scheduled fireworks display, hotels with rooms facing the Taipei 101 have been fully booked as early as September, while the occupancy rate for other rooms in these hotels has also increased to 80-90 percent.
For example, the Grand Hyatt Taipei, located right next to Taipei 101, has 200 "firework rooms." These rooms were fully booked for December 31 three months ago, and 98 percent of the hotel's 856 rooms have been booked for New Year's Eve.
Beginning with specially selected seasonal cuisine on its Christmas menu and culminating in the grand finale on New Year's Eve, the Grand Hyatt Taipei is presenting a countdown party, dubbed "The Hanging Garden, " on the theme of the illumination of the sky and an array of colorful flowers, magical fruit balls and gigantic vegetable centerpieces hanging from above to represent the four seasons
Although the price for attending the party is not cheap, at NT$6,288, plus 10-percent service charge, per person, 80 percent of the tickets have already been sold, said Luanne Li, the hotel's marketing communication manager, adding that the economic gloom seems to have had no effect on the hotel's business.
May Hu, assistant communications manager of the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei, said that business is booming ahead of Christmas and New Year, adding that business for the whole year has been good at the hotel, which targets foreign businesspeople.
The Shangri-La Far Eastern's rooms from which the fireworks display can be seen have also all been booked, she said, adding that the hotel will also give two free tickets, worth NT$2,800 each, to guests in the other rooms to attend its New Year's Eve countdown party by its swimming pool on the 43rd floor.
However, if you want to see something new, the Venetian Carnival Masked Masquerade at the Grand Formosa Regent Taipei and the musical performance at the Grand Howard Plaza Hotel in which guests can sway elegantly to romantic melodies, savor the exquisiteness of Italian cuisine, and marvel at the wonderful circus acts, live band performances and outstanding DJs, can certainly get everyone filled with excitement.
People's hearts should leap in joy during the Christmas and New Year holidays, blowing away a year of grim headlines of endless political struggles and enjoying the biggest party of all - Taipei City itself.
