French president in Kabul to meet Karzai, troops

French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Kabul on Saturday to meet with his country's troops here and with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the embassy said.
The focus of Sarkozy's trip is to meet with French troops stationed in Kabul, an official at the French Embassy said. He asked not to be identified because he wasn't the official spokesman.
Sarkozy was also to meet with Karzai. The two spoke in New York at the U.N. General Assembly and arranged the trip to Afghanistan, the official said.
This is Sarkozy's first trip to Afghanistan since being elected president in May.
France contributes about 1,300 troops to NATO's 41,000-strong International Security Assistance Force.
