World-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who arrived in Taichung on a chartered jet last night, has chosen Taichung as the last stop of the Asia leg of his farewell world tour that began early this year.
The 70-year-old opera legend was greeted by Taichung Mayor Jason Hu and his wife with flowers at Taichung's Chingchuankang Airport.
As Pavarotti exited his private jet, he was greeted by some admiring fans. Many struggled to take photographs with their cell phone cameras as Pavarotti made his way directly to the limousine that was waiting for him. Once in the vehicle, he paused briefly before taking off his hat and waving to his adoring fans before leaving the airport.
Hu told reporters yesterday that he has prepared a“mysterious gift”that is expected to leave a deep impression of Taichung in the opera singer's mind.
Pavarotti will sing at the Taichung Stadium on December 14 to an audience of more than 20,000 people.
Organizers said nearly all the seats have been sold, with all the seats priced at NT$1,000 and lower sold out.
The Taichung concert will be Pavarotti's only performance in Taiwan and the last one in his Asia tour, which also included concerts in South Korea and China.
Pavarotti is widely acclaimed as one of three“tenors of the century.”He has said he plans to retire next year to teach and spend more time with his family.
