Taiwan denies its cruise missile under development could carry nuclear warhead

Taiwan's military renewed its vow on Saturday not to produce nuclear weapons after an opposition lawmaker claimed the island was developing a cruise missile that can carry nuclear warheads.
"We've clearly stated in our defense white paper not to produce, develop, acquire, store or use nuclear or biochemical weapons," the Defense Ministry said on its Web site.
Su Chi, an opposition lawmaker, said Friday the "Hsiung Feng (Brave Wind) IIE" being developed by the military is intended to carry nuclear warheads.
"The claim was purely speculative," the ministry said.
Taiwan has reportedly test-fired the surface-to-surface cruise missile that is believed to have a range of 600 kilometers (360 miles), capable of striking Shanghai. But Taiwan has never displayed or deployed it.
The Defense Ministry recently proposed a 24.6 billion Taiwan dollars (US$750 million,
