American teenager King stuns top-seeded Bartoli in first round

American teen Vania King upset top-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of the WTA Tour's Sunfeast Open on Tuesday.
The 90th-ranked King, 18, faced only one break point in the one-hour-38-minute match. The 10th-ranked Bartoli won only 58 percent of the points on her first serve and 33 percent on her second, while King won 70 percent on both her first and second serve.
Bartoli was joined by fellow seeds Alla Kudryavtseva and Yaroslova Shvedova in exiting in the first round.
Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus defeated the fifth-seeded Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3, while Israel's Tzipora Obziler eliminted No. 9 Shvedova 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-1 in a 2 1/2-hour contest.
King converted four of her 12 break-point opportunities while hitting 82 percent of her first serves.
"Vania was outstanding today, while I wasn't up to it physically," said Bartoli, who held her service just once during the opening set.
In the second set, King broke Bartoli in the ninth game to lead 5-4. Bartoli rallied with her only break of the match, but King broker her again and then served out to win the match.
Poutchek dominated her 1-1/2 hour encounter against Kudryavtseva.
Poutchek broke the Russian's serve in the fourth game and then held the rest of the way to win the first set comfortably. She broke Kudryavtseva to open the second set but Kudryavtseva broke back to level the set at 2-2.
Both held until Poutchek broke again in the seventh and ninth games to subdue the 67th-ranked Russian.
Poutchek's next opponent will be Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, who defeated Italian Alberta Brianti 6-2, 7-5 Tuesday.
In other first-round matches Tuesday, Russia's Anastasia Rodionova defeated Hana Sromova of Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2 and Indian wild card Sunitha Rao edged Indonesia's Sandy Gumulya 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Edina Gallovits of Romania conceded her first-round match to Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan because of a left thigh sprain suffered during the first set, which she lost 6-2.
