Schwarzenegger postpones India trade mission, cancels UK visit

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday canceled an upcoming trip to the United Kingdom and postponed a trade mission to India that had been scheduled for late fall.
The governor said he canceled the trips because he wanted "to maintain the flexibility to call a special session."
Schwarzenegger's health care, political and water policy reforms have stalled in the state Legislature, which is scheduled to wind up its business for the year on Sept. 14 or perhaps earlier because of the Jewish holidays.
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, has said he would be open to extending the session, although Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, said he does not want to do that.
The governor can compel lawmakers to stay in town or return from vacation by calling a special session. But if legislative leaders do not want to go along, they can simply adjourn it.
Schwarzenegger had planned the United Kingdom trip to address the annual conference of Britain's Conservative Party in September. Instead, he will participate via satellite.
Schwarzenegger is still planning to go on a trade mission to India, but it has not yet been rescheduled.
