Colombia leaves veterans behind for qualifier warmups against Peru, Paraguay

Forward John Charria headed a list of mostly new faces chosen Friday by Colombia for two final warmups, against Peru and Paraguay, ahead of the start of the South American World Cup qualifiers.
Left off coach Jorge Luis Pinto's 22-man roster for the Sept. 8 friendly in Lima, and against Paraguay four days later in Bogota, are several veterans _ including Inter Milan's Ivan Ramirez Cordoba and Paris Saint-Germain's Mario Alberto Yepes _ blamed for the cafeteros' disappointing first-round exit at the Copa America in July.
Charria, a free kick specialist, has six goals in as many matches this season for Deportes Tolima, which leads the Copa Mustang Colombian league.
Returning to the squad is Radamel Falcao Garcia. The young River Plate striker missed the Copa America because of injury.
Defenders Amaranto Perea and Christian Zapata head the list of 11 foreign-based players called up for the matches, the last chance Pinto has to test players before Colombia's Oct. 14 debut against Brazil at home in South American World Cup qualifying.
Cordoba and Yepes, along with goalkeeper Miguel Calero, were among a group of veterans who reportedly rebelled against Pinto following the team's blowout losses against Paraguay and Argentina in its opening two group matches at the Copa America.
After managing to hold onto his job following Colombia's performance at the South American championship, Pinto is now being counted on to lead his country back to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
