England defender Glen Johnson transfers from Chelsea to Portsmouth

England defender Glen Johnson transferred Friday from Chelsea to Portsmouth for 4 million pounds (US$8.1 million; euro5.9 million).
"Portsmouth is a fantastic club with a lot of nice people," Johnson said Friday. "The fact that I played here last season was a big factor in my decision. Manager Harry Redknapp was a massive factor too _ he has belief in me."
Johnson played 27 games for Pompey last season while on loan at the club.
Johnson, 23, was Chelsea's first signing after Roman Abramovich's takeover at the club in July 2003.
The right back made just 61 starts in his four years at the club because of competition from Geremi and Paulo Ferreira. Even when the pair were injured, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho often preferred to use Ghana midfielder Michael Essien in the right back role, rather than Johnson.
While Geremi moved to Newcastle in the offseason, Chelsea pursued Brazil right back Daniel Alves throughout the offseason, and has since signed Juliano Belletti from FC Barcelona.
Johnson made his England debut in 2003 against Denmark. He has played five internationals.
