German retail sales in July slowed more than expected, government says

Retail sales in Germany slipped more than expected in July, with a dip in purchases of food and drinks leading the decline, the country's Federal Statistics Office said Friday.
The agency said that retail sales were 1.5 percent lower compared with July 2006, though they rose 0.3 percent month-to-month in July from June. Analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a monthly rise of half a percent.
The agency's figures were based on tallies from seven of Germany's 16 states, or about 76 percent of the country's total retail sales.
