Mexico's Televisa network celebrates 50 years of telenovelas

Mexico's Televisa network, known around the world for its soap operas, is celebrating 50 years of producing the melodramas with a series of special programs.
Televisa's president Emilio Azcarraga Jean said Thursday the company will transmit a show with the most memorable scenes and produce a soap opera about the making of a telenovela as seen by the makeup artists.
Grupo Televisa SAB telenovelas, packed with glamorous stars and romance, are wildly popular, airing in more than 60 countries on five continents, and making Mexican soap stars household names in China, Russia, Nigeria, and Uzbekistan.
Azcarraga Jean said Televisa has produced 720 telenovelas since the 1957 airing of its first soap, "Senda Prohibida," or "Forbidden Path."
He said telenovelas have reached a worldwide audience because they are "a family product" that "invites the viewer to dream."
