A new mother, Jana Rawlinson wins second world title

When she won her first world 400-meter hurdles title, her name was Jana Pittman and she was single.
Four years on, the Australian has done it again _ this time as Jana Rawlinson, a wife and the mother of eight-month-old son Cornelis.
"There is some truth about them saying that mommys come back strong, as a mommy you can do anything," Rawlinson said Thursday, after winning in 53.31 seconds, edging Yuliya Pechenkina of Russia (53.50). Anna Jesien of Poland was third in 53.92.
"The last 18 months have been truly incredible," she added. "Getting married, having a baby and then coming and winning a world title. I don't think you can beat that."
Rawlinson, who is married to British 400-meter hurdler Chris Rawlinson, was almost perfect through the first eight hurdles, building a solid lead Pechenkina, the defending champion and world record holder. She was a little rough through the last two after coming off the bend, but held on.
"Yes, there was a chance to catch her after the last hurdle," Pechenkina said. "But my muscles were heavy, especially my hamstring."
Rawlinson has struggled at times with her profile in Australia, being dubbed "Drama Jana" in some sections of the media for her melodramatic buildup to the 2004 Olympics and a spat with a teammate.
She is bound to get a good reception now.
Talking like a publicist, Rawlinson spoke of bringing a higher profile to the 400 hurdles, an event that is often overshadowed by other women's events.
"I'm really hoping that Yuliya and I can dominate the sport and bring a bit more love into the women's 400 hurdles because it's a great event," she said.
Rawlinson said she's only been back in full training for three or four months. That was tough, but maybe not as testing as simply taking care of her son.
"Realistically it (the comeback) was a little bit more difficult than I anticipated," she said. "We had a really rocky road. Little things like my baby was in day care and brought back colds. If we can climb this mountain, this early, anything is possible."
