Injured Vieira and Gallas in France squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers

Injured Vieira and Gallas in France squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers

France coach Raymond Domenech recalled defender Lilian Thuram on Thursday and picked injured players Patrick Vieira and William Gallas for upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Italy and Scotland.
Domenech also recalled David Trezeguet, even though the Juventus striker was angered at not playing in a recent friendly against Slovakia when Domenech selected him for France's reserve team.
France, which leads Group B, plays at Italy on Sept. 8 and hosts Scotland four days later. Scotland is the only team that has beaten France in Euro 2008 qualifying.
Trezeguet scored three goals in Juventus' return to the Serie A, and he is approaching his 100th Italian league goal. He is also third on France's all-time list with 34 goals.
"David shows he has the means and the talent," Domenech said. "For a striker, the competition (for places) applies to everyone. Djibril (Cisse) is injured. We don't know if he will play on Sunday (against Paris Saint-Germain), so the competition affects him, too."
Even though Gallas has a groin strain and Vieira has a thigh injury, Domenech called up both players.
Even if Gallas does not recover in time to play, Domenech said it was essential for the Arsenal defender to come because he is "one of the leaders who gets the messages across (to the others)."
Nicolas Anelka, who has scored three goals for Bolton, and Karim Benzema, who has scored four for six-time defending champion Lyon, are also included.
PSG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau will start in goal as a replacement for the injured Gregory Coupet.
