New Aston Villa signing Zat Knight was arrested after a police raid _ hours before his presentation at the Premier League club.
"Police have carried out a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs and Firearms Act this morning at an address in Erdington," West Midlands police said in a statement released Wednesday. "Two men, aged 26 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of Class A drugs offenses."
Class A category includes heroin and cocaine.
Knight's mother, Sandra, reportedly lives at the address in Erdington, a suburb of Birmingham. Knight's 26-year-old brother Carlos was also arrested after the raid.
"The 27-year-old has since been released on police bail," the police statement said without naming Knight. "The 26-year-old continues to help with our inquiries. A quantity of controlled drugs was seized."
Later Wednesday, Knight completed his transfer to Villa from Fulham for 3.5 million pounds (US$7 million; euro5.2 million). Neither the player nor the club made any mention of the incident.
Knight was born in the Aston suburb of Birmingham and played twice for an understrength England team in 2005.
