Saladino wins gold with last jump

Irving Saladino needed a regional record on his last effort to win the long jump Thursday and capture Panama's first world championships gold medal.
U.S.-born European champion Andrew Howe of Italy looked like he'd won gold, when he leaped 8.47 meters on his last jump to improve Saladino's leading mark by one centimeter.
But with the last jump of the competition, Saladino, unbeaten this year and seeking his first major title, jumped 8.57.
Dwight Phillips, the 2005 champion, was third in 8.30.
