Broken hand forces Kashima out of world championships

Two-time world champion Takehiro Kashima of Japan is out of the world gymnastics championships after breaking a bone in his left hand during training.
Kashima, who won the world title on pommel horse in 2003 and added a bronze medal on the event a year later at the Athens Olympics, was practicing his pommel horse routine Aug. 23 when he slammed his left hand into one of the pommels, breaking one of the bones. He had surgery in Japan on Tuesday and is expected to be out for three months.
Kashima, who also won the 2003 world title on high bar, was replaced by alternate Hisashi Mizutori. Mizutori was part of Japan's gold medal squad at the Athens Olympics, and was second in the all-around at the 2005 world championships.
The world championships begin Saturday with the women's preliminaries. The men begin competition Monday, with Japan and China favored.
