EU teams up with UEFA in ad campaign encouraging people to get fit, fight fat

The European Union teamed up with European soccer's governing body UEFA on Thursday to launch a television campaign to persuade people to get up off their couches and do more to get fit.
EU spokesman Philip Tod said TV ads would target soccer fans viewing Champions League games this season, encouraging them to "get out of their armchairs and be physically active."
The health campaign was announced amid renewed EU warnings that the lack of regular physical exercise and unhealthy diets had turned obesity into "a serious public health problem" for millions of Europeans.
The European Commission has warned that more than half of all adults in the 27-nation bloc are overweight or obese, and estimated that some 22 million children are also overweight.
"Europeans are eating too much and exercising too little," EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said. "We aim to help viewers better understand the importance of physical exercise in living healthier lives."
Officials said they hoped their 30-second TV spot, which UEFA is allowing to be aired during half-time breaks free of charge, will reach between 80 million and 100 million viewers during each match week of the Champions League.
The ad features overweight men in recliners who take up a game of soccer while seated.
It will be shown in more than 40 European countries, including all 27 EU member states starting later this month when Europe's top soccer competition gets underway.
