Defending champion French 400-meter relay team pulls out of relay

The French men's 400-meter relay team, the defending champion in the event, has pulled out of the world championships.
"They had until today (Thursday) at midday to confirm and they have said they will not compete," said Nick Davies, IAAF spokesman.
French team spokesman Jean Philippe Manzelle said Eddy de Lepine and David Alerte were injured.
De Lepine ran the third leg when France surprised everyone and won the 400 relays in Helsinki in 2005. He has a groin injury. Alerte has injured his foot.
Despite being defending champion, there was little chance the French would have retained the title.
