New women's golf tournament in Singapore with US$2 million prize purse

Singapore will host a US$2 million (euro1.46 million) golf tournament next year featuring the world's top women players, organizers said Thursday.
The HSBC Women's Champions will be played over 72 holes of individual stroke play at the Tanah Merah Country Club, Feb. 28-March 2, 2008, in Singapore, HSBC said.
The LPGA-sanctioned tournament's qualification criteria mirrors that of the US$5 million (euro3.9 million) HSBC Champions played in Shanghai, with winners from around the world invited to compete for the "Champion of Champions" title.
Players who are already eligible through victory on the LPGA Tour include top-ranked Lorena Ochoa of Mexico, ten-time Major winner Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis of the United States, plus Se Ri-pak of South Korea.
The prize money is the largest purse for a women's golf event in Asia, organizers said. The winner will receive US$300,000 (euro219,515).
Aside from winners of this year's LPGA tournaments, the field of golfers that will qualify include: the top 30 players on the Rolex rankings as of Dec. 31; LPGA major champions from 2005 to 2007; and winners of the Japan Women's Open, the JLPGA Championship Cup, the JLPGA Tour Championship Cup, The KLPGA Championship, the Dubai Ladies Masters, the Scandinavian TPC, next year's Australian Ladies Masters and Australian Women's Open, and others.
