Indian authorities to pursue cases against Reliance Retail protesters

Indian authorities said they will pursue criminal cases against protesters who attacked Western-style grocery stores in eastern India.
The two recent protests took place at two Reliance Retail stores that were under construction and were to be the first of the company's stores in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state. In the wake of the demonstrations, the company decided to delay opening the stores in the city.
"The government will do whatever is required under the law to stop vandalism on Reliance properties," West Bengal chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb said late Tuesday.
No one was injured in the protests, which occurred on Aug. 18 and again last Sunday. More than 100 people participated in the first protest, and a smaller crowd in the second.
