Sevilla asks for Super Cup to go ahead despite death of Antonio Puerta

The European Super Cup will be played Friday despite the death of Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta.
UEFA said Wednesday it had received confirmation from the Spanish club that it wished to proceed with the match against AC Milan in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
"We weren't going to force Sevilla to play in such a situation," UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said. "We asked them if they wanted to play the Super Cup and they thought about it. They came back to us and told us they wanted to play as homage to Antonio."
The match will be a tribute to the 22-year-old Puerta, who died Tuesday, three days after collapsing on the field during his team's Spanish league match against Getafe.
Players will wear black armbands, stadium flags will be flown at half mast and there will be a minute's silence in addition to a short film recapping the player's career before the match, Gaillard said.
"Everyone has been traumatized by this," Gaillard said. "His (Puerta's) wife was seven months pregnant, and he basically grew up with the club and everyone knew him and the whole Sevilla community loved him. AC Milan was also shaken by this tragedy."
Gaillard said the Italian club was ready to cancel or postpone the match if necessary.
UEFA postponed Sevilla's Champions League qualifying match against AEK Athens on Tuesday to allow the team to return to Spain for Puerta's funeral. Sevilla won the first leg 2-0.
The game will be played Monday. Sevilla had been scheduled to play Osasuna in the Spanish league on Monday, but that match has also been postponed.
Puerta died of "multiple organ failure stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest" and subsequent coronary problems, according to Virgen del Rocio Hospital director Gimeno Guerrero.
He lost consciousness and fell near his own goal Saturday in the 31st minute, but was able to walk off minutes later after being treated by team doctors. But doctors said he had a heart attack in the locker room, and at least one more in the emergency room of the Seville hospital where he was taken.
