MOFA restates US misinterpreting Taiwan's referendum plan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Wednesday the United States has mistaken Taiwan's referendum plan as a step towards declaration of independence and the ministry will seek to communicate with Washington to defuse the misunderstanding.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Chien-yeh told reporters he regretted US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte's remarks that Washington opposes Taiwan's plan to hold a referendum on its United Nations membership bid.
Negroponte told a Hong Kong-based television that the US considers the UN vote a mistake and urged Taiwan leaders to quit pushing for the referendum to avoid hurting bilateral ties.
Wang said the proposed referendum is a domestic affair and an exercise of popular sovereignty and will not violate President Chen Shui-bian's“four no's”pledge. Chen said on his inauguration he will not seek to alter national title, flag, anthem and territory or rewrite the Constitution during his term as president.
