Guatemalan candidate killed in election-related violence

A city council candidate from Nobel Laureate and presidential candidate Rigoberta Menchu's party was shot dead Tuesday while walking home, party officials said.
The attack on Clara Luz Lopez Marroquin came amid a wave of campaign-related violence ahead of the Sept. 9 election for president, federal lawmakers and local officials. More than 50 politicians, activists and their relatives have been killed since the campaign began in May.
Lopez Marroquin was a candidate for city council in the municipality of Casillas from the Encuentro Por Guatemala Party, which is running Menchu for president.
"This is a clear message for our candidates and for us," Menchu said.
Menchu is the first Mayan woman ever to run for president in Guatemala, where the nearly half of the population is Mayan. But she has gained little support and is a distant fourth in the latest opinion polls.
Menchu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her work on behalf of indigenous peoples.
