RTL says first-half profit fell 2 percent

European media group RTL Group, a co-producer of the "American Idol" show, said Tuesday that first-half profit fell 2 percent after the company incurred restructuring charges.
Net income for the six months through June 30 dipped to euro290 million (US$396.3 million) from euro296 million in the same period a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Sales advanced 1.3 percent to euro2.9 billion (US$4 billion).
Still, RTL _ controlled by the closely held media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG _ reported an increase in profit margin before tax and other expenses to almost 18 percent from just under 17 percent.
"We remain cautious but optimistic on the outlook for advertising in the second half of the year where visibility remains limited," the company said. "The RTL family grew its audience market shares considerably in the very competitive German market."
RTL shares rose 0.7 percent to euro75.93 (US$103.75) on Euronext.
RTL has interests in more than 60 television and radio channels in eleven countries, including RTL television in Germany, British TV channel Five and M6 in France. Its production arm FremantleMedia co-produces "American Idol" and "American Inventor."
