Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka were both nominated Tuesday in four categories for the International Cricket Council awards.
The two are the only nominees for captain of the year and are also in contention for cricketer of the year, test player of the year and one-day international player of the year.
The awards consist of eight prizes based on performances between Aug. 9, 2006 and Aug. 8. Winners will be announced Sept. 10 in Johannesburg, South Africa _ one day before the opening match of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup.
"There is so much great cricket to reflect upon during the voting period," ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said.
Ponting won cricketer and test player of the year awards in 2006. Jayawardene won the 2006 captain of the year.
Eight other players _ West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Australians Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey and Glenn McGrath, Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, England batsman Kevin Pietersen, South Africa paceman Shaun Pollock and Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf _ were each nominated for three awards.
The eight prizes also include umpire of the year and women's cricketer of the year.
The nominations were made by a selection panel of five former players: Sunil Gavaskar of India, Alec Stewart of England, New Zealand's Chris Cairns, Gary Kirsten of South Africa and Pakistan's Iqbal Qasim.
The awards will be voted for by a 56-person panel involving current captains, umpires, match referees, former players and members of the media.
