New Caledonia beats Tuvalu 1-0 in Oceania World Cup qualifying match

Kabeu Iamel's goal gave New Caledonia a 1-0 win over Tuvalu in an Oceania Confederation World Cup qualifying soccer match Monday.
It was New Caledonia's second straight 1-0 win and left the team level with Fiji at the top of Pool A in the South Pacific Games tournament.
Fiji moved to 2-0 as well with a 4-0 win over the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands beat Tonga 4-0 and host Samoa beat American Samoa 7-0.
Osea Vakatalesau opened the Fiji scoring and Waqa Taniela, Josaia Bukalidi and Malakai Kanihewe added other goals.
George Suri, Menapi Commins, Henry Faarodo and Alick Maemae scored the Solomon Island goals to give the side its second straight win in the tournament. Chris Carhill scored twice to lead Samoa, 1-1, which led 3-0 at halftime.
The finalists from the Sept. 7 gold medal match and the third-place finisher will qualify for the second Oceania round, a four-country tournament with New Zealand.
The winner of that tournament must play an Asian Confederation team in a two-match series, with the winner advancing to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
