Bus driver fired after carrying passenger clinging to bus

A man who drove a city bus while a passenger clung to the sideview mirror for a half-mile (almost a kilometer) has been fired, the city said.
Kris S. Burke, 31, was fired after Metro Transit officials finished an internal investigation, General Manager Chuck Kamp said Monday.
Burke was fired on Thursday, less than a month after the incident occurred in the middle of the city on July 29. A criminal investigation is still ongoing, he said.
Metro officials said Burke became angry and refused to allow Michael Cooper back onto the bus after learning from another passenger that he had urinated on the bus. The other passenger told the driver about Cooper after he got off the bus at a drug store. Cooper, 32, denied it was him.
When Cooper tried to get back on the bus about 30 minutes later, Burke recognized him, barred him from boarding and pulled away. Cooper grabbed the sideview mirror, put his feet on the bumper and held on for 73 seconds as the bus reached speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). He has said he held onto the mirror because he did not think Burke would drive off. Cooper finally jumped off the bus when it stopped at an intersection.
Officials reviewed surveillance tapes from the bus the day after the incident and suspended Burke with pay.
Kamp said the agency is waiting until the criminal investigation is finished before releasing the tapes.
