Greek Olympic official Filaretos dies aged 82

Nikos Filaretos, who rose to vice chairman in 24 years as a Greek representative of the International Olympic Committee, has died, the IOC said on Monday. He was 82.
No cause of death was given in a statement released by the IOC. Greece's national Olympic committee could not provide information either.
Filaretos was secretary general of Greece's NOC when he was elected as an IOC member in 1981.
He became an IOC vice chairman six years later, and headed the commission for the International Olympic Academy and Olympic Education among other posts before finishing in 2005, a year after helping to organize the Athens Games.
He became an honorary IOC member.
"Nikos Filaretos was an ardent supporter of the Olympic ideal and worked hard on the promotion of the Olympic movement in Greece and at international level," the IOC said.
