Pop singer faces penalty for drunk driving and manslaughter

A local pop singer is facing severe punishment for drunk driving and a possible civil lawsuit after her car ran over a 41-year-old nurse while she was driving under the influence of alcohol, police said Wednesday. The nurse died in hospital from serious injury.
Police said Lin Hsiao-pei, 34, will face charges of involuntary manslaughter and offenses against public safety because her car ran over a pedestrian who died, and Lin's blood alcohol concentration hit 1.1 mg per liter, far above the limit of 0.55 mg.
Lin will be subject to a maximum of three-year imprisonment according to the Criminal Code, along with a maximum fine of NT$60,000 (US$1,810). Additionally, she will also have her driver’s license revoked.
The victim's family also has the right to file a civil suit against Lin to claim compensation of up to NT$10 million, according to police.
