Cobras slugfest rewrites CPBL records

The Macoto Cobras have firmly entrenched themselves as the Chinese Professional Baseball League first-half leaders, and they showed their versatility on Saturday by pounding out 26 hits in an extraordinary 23-16 victory over the Brother Elephants.
Trailing by five going into the bottom of the fifth, the Cobras rallied for 11 runs and never looked back, negating a two-homer, six RBI performance by Elephants' first baseman Peng "Chia Chia" Cheng-min.

The game, which brought the Cobras' magic number for a first half title to 11, set CPBL records for most runs in a game (39), most hits in a game (47), most runs by a single team (23), most hits by a single team (26), and most runs by a losing team (16).
The Cobras' Hsieh "the Taiwan Plumber" Chia-hsien had six RBIs for the winners and was named MVP of the game.
Peng had been on a rampage early in the season, hitting 13 homers in the team's first 29 games, but in his next five games until last night, he registered only five hits in 21 at-bats, none of them long balls.
To snap out of his mini-slump, Peng took it easy in batting practice before Saturday's game.
"I didn't want to wear myself out, and the truth is, it was really hot out there," Peng said.
Peng blasted homers in the first and seventh innings to bring his total to 15 on the season, and missed another one in the ninth when his double hit off the wall just inches away from clearing the fence, although to the Brothers' slugger it looked like it made it out.
With his six RBIs, Peng took over the league lead from Kao Kuo-ching of the Uni-President Lions, and extended his league leads in hitting with a .434 average and home runs with 15.
None of that mattered to the outcome, however, after Macoto unleashed an 11-run barrage in the fifth on eight hits and four walks that even had the scoreboard overwhelmed because it could only accommodate a single digit for runs scored during an inning.
Brother got its revenge last night with a 7-6 win over the Cobras. Macoto made four errors leading to three unearned runs, costing it the game.
The Elephant pitchers did not exactly shut down the Cobras, who mashed 13 hits, but at least they prevent Macoto from mounting a comeback after the Elephants jumped to an early lead.
