TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 63,170 local COVID cases on Thursday (June 16), an 8.3% decrease from the previous day.

Philip Lo (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division, also confirmed 51 imported cases, bringing the country's total case count to 3,135,565. The 168 deaths reported that day brought the country's total COVID death toll to 4,714.

Local cases

The local cases include 29,845 males, 33,301 females, and 24 cases still under investigation, ranging in age from under 5 to their 90s. Lo noted that no cities or counties had reported 10,000 or more cases that day, indicating a downward trend across the country.

Taichung City reported the most cases with 9,523, followed by 9,316 in Kaohsiung City, 7,440 in New Taipei City, 6,163 in Tainan City, 5,185 in Changhua County, 5,066 in Taoyuan City, 4,025 in Taipei City, 3,032 in Pingtung County, 1,606 in Yunlin County, 1,605 in Miaoli County, 1,462 in Hsinchu County, 1,458 in Nantou County, 1,323 in Chiayi County, 1,245 in Hsinchu City, 1,187 in Yilan County, 888 in Hualien County, 787 in Keelung City, 769 in Chiayi City, 673 Taitung County, 262 in Penghu County, 141 in Kinmen County, and 14 in Lienchiang County.

COVID deaths

The 168 deaths announced on Thursday include 93 men and 75 women ranging in age from their teens to their 90s. All of these patients were classified as severe cases, 159 had a history of chronic disease, and 113 had not received their third dose of the COVID vaccine. Their dates of diagnosis ranged from May 5 to June 13 and dates of death from May 26 to June 13.

Imported cases

The 51 imported cases include 27 males, 23 females, and one case under investigation, ranging in age from their teens to their 70s. Between June 2-15, five arrived from the U.S., three from Vietnam, one from Germany, one from Luxembourg, and one from Thailand, while the country of origin of 40 other imported cases is still being investigated.

COVID case statistics

Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 12,550,511 COVID tests, with 9,410,508 coming back negative. Of the 3,135,565 confirmed cases, 13,611 were imported, 3,121,900 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three from a cargo pilot cluster, one is unresolved, and 14 are under investigation.

Up until now, 4,714 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Of the 4,699 deaths from local infections, 1,432 were in New Taipei City; 797 in Taipei City; 366 in Taichung City; 346 in Taoyuan City; 328 in Kaohsiung City; 242 in Tainan City; 185 in Changhua County; 155 in Pingtung County; 141 in Keelung City; 104 in Yilan County; 90 in Nantou County; 84 in Yunlin County; 74 in Hualien County; 65 in Hsinchu County, Taitung County, and Chiayi County; 62 in Miaoli County; 49 in Chiayi City; 36 in Hsinchu City, eight in Kinmen County, and five in Penghu County. The 15 other deaths were imported cases.
