Australia's University of New South Wales to close Singapore campus

Australia's University of New South Wales to close Singapore campus

An Australian university said Wednesday it will close its newly opened Singapore campus at the end of June due to low enrollment figures.
The University of New South Wales, which opened UNSW Asia in January, said it will cease operations after the first semester ends next month. It was Singapore's first foreign private university offering undergraduate and post-graduate studies.
"The enrollment numbers for 2007 did not meet our expectations, and this has caused us to revise our projections," UNSW Asia said in a statement, addressed to students and posted on its Web site.
"The decision to close down is a difficult one, but it is the prudent course of action to take," it said.
The statement said enrolled students will be offered a place in an equivalent program at the university's Sydney campus next semester, along with scholarships to help with travel and accommodation costs. Tuition fees will be set at UNSW Asia rates.
