Taiwan reports 3,766 local COVID cases

1,325 COVID cases reported in New Taipei, 739 in Taipei, and 588 in Taoyuan

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Friday (April 22) announced 3,766 local COVID cases, a 26% increase from the previous day.

CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) also confirmed 93 imported cases. The command center did not announce any deaths, leaving the COVID death toll at 856.

Local cases

The local cases reported include 1,855 males and 1,910 females ranging in age from under five to their 90s, with the dates of onset ranging from March 20 to April 22. Among Friday's cases, 2,077 were asymptomatic.

New Taipei City reported the largest number of cases with 1,325, followed by 739 in Taipei City, 588 in Taoyuan City, 275 in Keelung City, 183 in Taichung City, 117 in Kaohsiung City, 100 in Hualien County, 80 in Yilan County, 71 in Tainan City, 57 in Changhua County, 50 in Yunlin County, 48 in Hsinchu County, 42 in Taitung County, 23 each in Hsinchu City and Miaoli County, 22 in Pingtung County, 10 in Nantou County, five in Kinmen County, four in Chiayi County, two in Chiayi City, and one each in Penghu County and Lienchiang County.

Imported cases

The 93 new imported cases include 47 males, 45 females, and one case under investigation ranging in age from under 10 to their 60s. Of these, 83 tested positive upon arrival at the airport and 10 during quarantine.

They arrived between March 18 and April 21 from Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore. The country of origin of 84 cases are still being investigated.

COVID case statistics

Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 7,951,754 COVID tests, with 7,903,776 coming back negative. Of the 47,100 confirmed cases, 10,187 were imported, 36,859 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three were from a cargo pilot cluster, and one is unresolved.

A total of 206 people have been removed as confirmed cases, while 14 cases are still under investigation. Up until now, 856 individuals have succumbed to the disease.

Of the 842 deaths from local infections, 415 were in New Taipei; 322 in Taipei; 30 in Keelung; 28 in Taoyuan; 15 in Changhua County; 13 in Hsinchu County; five in Taichung; three in Miaoli County; two each in Yilan and Hualien counties; and one each in Hsinchu City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Taitung County. The 14 other deaths were imported cases.
