Kyrgyz protesters end blocking road to Canadian-operated gold mine

A Canadian-controlled gold mining company said Monday that it has negotiated the removal of a roadblock by protesters who had demanded that the government's share in a gold mine in a major Kyrgyz mine be increased.
The several dozen protesters freed up the road to the Kumtor mine on Saturday, ending an eight-day long roadblock, Kumtor Operating said in a statement.
"The company's vehicles have free access to the production facilities. The enterprise is running as normal," it said.
The Kyrgyz government, which holds a 16 percent stake in Kumtor, has said recently that it wants to review its contract with the Canadian Cameco Corp., which is a major shareholder in Centerra Gold Inc., a joint venture that works the mine, to boost its revenues.
In March the Kyrgyz parliament began considering a bill that would allow the nationalization of the country's gold mines.
Centerra is the biggest foreign investor in the impoverished former Soviet republic.
