Indonesian woman dies from bird flu, bringing country's toll to 76

An Indonesian woman died of bird flu after coming into contact with a chicken believed to be carrying the virus, bringing the death toll in the country hardest hit by H5N1 to 76, a health official and a doctor said Monday.
The victim was four months pregnant when she was admitted to Adam Malik Hospital in North Sumatra's capital Medan on Thursday, said Dr. Luhur Suroso, who treated the woman. She died on Saturday.
Laboratory tests confirmed the 26-year-old woman had the H5N1 bird flu virus, said I Nyoman Kandun, a senior official at the health ministry.
Kandun said the woman had slaughtered, cooked and eaten an infected chicken a week before she developed bird flu symptoms.
Her death raised Indonesia's total number of bird flu infections to 96 _ 76 of them fatal _ since it first broke in Asia out two years ago.
