Acer, Taiwan's flagship PC brand, unveiled on Thursday two notebook designs that the vendor said address the needs and expectations of consumer and commercial notebook users.
Acer's full line of consumer laptops features Dolby Home Theater for virtual surround sound.
"The new Aspire Gemstone notebook has a noticeably rounded and fuller shape; a bold diversion from the traditional squarish designs that focus on minimizing notebook thickness and weight," said J.T. Wang, chairman and chief executive officer of Acer Inc.
"As the world's fastest growing PC vendor among the top five and leap-frogging to the No. 3 ranking, we are now in position to set the trend in notebook design with the new Aspire Gemstone."
Gartner Dataquest's preliminary data for the first quarter of 2007 ranked Acer as the world's No. 3 computer brand.
"Acer is tailoring its notebook design and functionality for consumer and commercial market needs," said Jim Wong, president of the IT Products Business Group for Acer Inc.
"The Aspire brand characteristics are easy and fun, while the TravelMate focuses on dependability for the mobile user."
Acer's design team worked with BMW Group DesignworksUSA to study design trends, develop the concept and visualize new forms. Findings showed that three of the most important design features were color and material, branding and naming, and shape treatment, the computer vendor said.
Aspire boasts a holographic 3D finish. The cover features a shiny jet-black frame encasing a satin-finish sub-layer with the Acer logo floating above like a holographic projection. This unique feature is achieved through an advanced In-Mold Design technique, the company said.
The notebook also has a light gray ceramic-like interior surface. The whole laptop is smoothly curved like a finely-cut opal, Acer added.
The laptop is also equipped with Acer MediaTouch. Its seven touch-sensitive media keys make easy and quick media control with great touch feedback.
With the new Aspire, Acer is the world's first to offer Dolby Home Theater for virtual surround sound across the full line of consumer notebooks, adding a whole new dimension with quality acoustics to Digital Home entertainment, the company said.
Acer's new TravelMate, designed for the mobile worker, has a slim and sturdy cover made of magnesium alloy. This material is 20 times stronger and much lighter than plastic, thereby minimizing weight and protecting it against drops, shock, vibration, dust, rain and everyday wear and tear.
The machine also boasts enhanced security. Acer BioProtect technology is a complete fingerprint recognition solution that eliminates the need to remember user ID or password, and the process of typing in these login data, and prevent wild guesses from intruders. Simply swipe your finger across the reader to turn on and login applications like msn and e-mail.
The laptop also boasts easy-access hot keys and the Acer Video Conference solution.
