Philippines to get 11 military helicopters as part of US assistance

The Philippine air force will receive 11 refurbished UH-1H helicopters as part of U.S. military assistance, while the rest of the country's chopper fleet remains grounded after a recent fatal crash, officials said Thursday.
The Vietnam War-era "Huey" helicopters are the workhorse of the poorly funded Philippine military, which has been battling communist and Muslim rebels for decades.
The 11 second hand aircraft will arrive next week at the former U.S. Clark Air Base, northwest of Manila, said Philippine air force spokesman Lt. Col. Epifanio Panzo.
All of the country's 41 Hueys were indefinitely grounded after one crashed Sunday along a busy street in the central city of Cebu, killing nine people, seven of them on the ground.
Investigators were trying to determine whether the accident may have been caused by kites, after nylon cords of the type used in kite-flying were found coiled in the assembly that connects the main rotor to the aircraft's body.
