Syngenta reports 9 percent rise in 1st-quarter sales

Agrochemicals producer Syngenta AG posted a 9 percent increase in first-quarter revenues Wednesday, saying sales increased across all product lines.
The Swiss company, which reports profit figures only for the half year and full year, said turnover reached US$2.96 billion (euro2.18 billion).
Syngenta's crop protection lines recorded US$2 billion (euro1.5 billion) in revenue, while seed sales rose 11 percent to US$940 million (euro690.92 million) from US$846 million in the same quarter last year.
Markets reacted to the results with a flurry of sales, taking Syngenta shares down 4.3 percent to close at 231.00 Swiss francs (US$190.37; euro139.93) in Zurich.
But analysts at Zuercher Kantonalbank said the results showed Syngenta had strong profit potential and pointed out that the company says it is still on target for a 10 percent or greater increase in earnings per share for the full year.
