Fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis struggled past German rookie Matthias Bachinger 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the BMW Open.
Baghdatis became the first seeded player in the quarterfinals after Tommy Haas was beaten Tuesday and seventh-seeded Guillermo Canas retired from his match with abdominal muscle problems.
The 2006 Australian Open finalist delayed play for five minutes by arguing calls that he felt cost him the first set against a 20-year-old German player making his ATP tour debut.
The 211th-ranked Bachinger, who entered two challenger tour events this season, appeared nervous and made several key errors in the deciding set.
Also, Alexander Waske beat Daniel Brands, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
