Jobless rate in euro area falls to 7.2 percent in March

Unemployment in the 13 nations that use the euro fell to 7.2 percent in March, the EU statistics agency Eurostat said Wednesday.
The jobless rate was 7.3 percent in February and has been falling steadily to levels not seen since 1993 as the euro economy enjoys a strong burst of growth.
Eurostat said that 10.8 million people were seeking work in the euro area in March. Across the entire 27-nation European Union, unemployment was 7.3 percent, the same as a month before.
Poland reported the highest number of jobseekers at 11.4 percent, with Slovakia close behind at 10.8 percent and France posting a provisional rate of 8.7 percent.
The EU's largest economy, Germany, had a provisional rate of 7 percent, Eurostat said. Denmark and the Netherlands had the lowest unemployment rates of 3.4 percent.
European jobless figures are still far higher than other major industrialized economies. In March, the United States reported that unemployment was 4.4 percent while Japan posted a rate of 4 percent.
