Tokyo prosecutors appeal acquittal of rapist's attack on British woman

Prosecutors have appealed a court ruling that cleared a serial rapist of charges that he attacked a British woman whose dismembered body was found in a seaside cave, a court official said yesterday.
Millionaire real estate developer Joji Obara was convicted of nine rapes and sentenced to life in prison on February 24 after a six-year trial. Among the rape victims was an Australian woman, Carita Ridgway, who died after she was drugged and attacked in 1992.
But in a decision that triggered outrage in Britain, judge Tsutomu Tochigi dismissed all charges related to the death of Lucie Blackman in 2000, saying there was no concrete evidence linking Obara to the Briton's death.
Prosecutors filed their appeal of Tokyo District Court ruling last Friday, a court spokeswoman said yesterday on condition of anonymity, citing court policy.
The spokeswoman declined to offer any other details and it was not immediately clear what part of the ruling prosecutors were appealing.
