Philadelphia orchestra concert multicast to six audiences

The Philadelphia Orchestra has begun simulcasting its performances, with its latest concert showed live in six locations around the world, according to a media report.
Audiences at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark; at the University of Porto in Portugal; and at three U.S. universities saw and heard the Sunday afternoon concert in a "multicast" on the Internet2 fiber-optic broadband educational network, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
"My dream is that we could have 10,000 or 20,000 people hearing the Philadelphia Orchestra live, instead of the 2,000 sitting in the hall," Ed Cambron, orchestra vice president of marketing, told the paper.
Orchestra board Chairman Hal Sorgenti said the potential for worldwide exposure, particularly with Western classical music emerging in Asia, could help ensure the orchestra's continued future.
The closed-circuit Internet2 is a consortium of U.S. educational institutions. The Philadelphia Orchestra says it is the first major orchestra to explore concert "multicasts."
