Taiwan reports 14 local COVID cases, 1 death

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday (Jan. 13) announced 14 local COVID cases and one death.

CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced 51 imported cases in addition to the 14 local infections. Chen also announced one death, raising the COVID death toll to 851.

Local cases

Chen said the local cases include three males and 11 females ranging in age from under the age of 10 to their 60s.

Imported cases

The 51 imported cases include 17 males and 28 females, and six individuals still under investigation, ranging in age from under 5 to their 70s. Of the imported cases, 24 tested positive upon arrival at the airport, while 27 tested positive during quarantine.

Between Dec. 29 and Jan. 12, they entered Taiwan from the U.S. (28 cases), Vietnam, France, Australia, the Philippines, the U.K., the United Arab Emirates, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Germany, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, and Italy. The country of origin of three cases is still being investigated.

COVID deaths

The single death reported was an imported infection, case No. 16,906, who was a Taiwanese man in his 50s with a history of chronic disease. He was diagnosed with COVID while in Vietnam in December of last year.

He was transported to Taiwan via an emergency medical flight on Dec. 17 and was placed in a hospital isolation ward to undergo treatment. He died on Jan. 9 of this year.

COVID case statistics

Since the outbreak began, Taiwan has carried out 5,187,725 COVID tests, with 5,168,285 coming back negative. Of the 17,624 confirmed cases, 2,905 were imported, 14,665 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three were from a cargo pilot cluster, and one was unresolved.

A total of 114 people have been removed as confirmed cases, while 14 cases are still under investigation. To date, 851 individuals have succumbed to the disease.

Of the 838 deaths from local infections, 413 were in New Taipei; 322 in Taipei; 29 in Keelung; 27 in Taoyuan; 15 in Changhua County; 13 in Hsinchu County; five in Taichung; three in Miaoli County; two each in Yilan and Hualien counties; and one each in Hsinchu City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Taitung County. The 13 other deaths were imported cases.
