China's Xinhua says Beijing is opposed to new ties between Taiwan and St. Lucia

China's Foreign Ministry lashed out Tuesday at the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia, calling its resumption of diplomatic relations with Beijing's rival Taiwan a "brutal interference" in Chinese affairs.
St. Lucia's restoring ties with Taiwan was an "open violation" of the 1997 agreement that established diplomatic relations between Beijing and the Caribbean island nation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said in a statement carried by the official Xinhua News Agency.
The resumption of ties marks a "brutal interference in China's internal affairs," Liu said. "We express indignation and opposition."
China and Taiwan split amid civil war 58 years ago, and ever since Beijing has tried to keep Taiwan diplomatically isolated as a pressure tactic to force reunification. The two sides frequently offer inducements to get countries to switch sides.
