Berlin Philharmonic to perform Mahler on U.S. tour

The Berlin Philharmonic and conductor Sir Simon Rattle will perform landmark late works by Gustav Mahler during a six-concert tour in New York and Boston in November, orchestra officials said Monday.
The orchestra plans a total of 131 concerts for the 2007-8 season, with 38 tour performances including appearances March 15-24 at the Easter Festival in Salzburg, Austria.
At Carnegie Hall in New York, the orchestra will perform Mahler's Symphony No. 9, "The Song of the Earth," and the unfinished Symphony No. 10 in the version by Deryck Cooke. Dates for those concerts are Nov. 13, 14 and 16.
The tour also includes two performances of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" at the United Palace Theater on Nov. 17-18 in an educational dance project involving 120 New York City public high school students, and a final Mahler concert at Boston's Symphony Hall on Nov. 19.
