In the women's first round, third-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic beat France's Aravane Rezai 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Fifth-seeded Olga Poutchkova dropped a set in an all-Russian match against Anastasia Rodionova before winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
Victoria Azarenka of Bulgaria defeated France's Virginie Razzano 7-6 (14), 7-5, and Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain ousted Portugal's Ana Catarina Nogueira 6-1, 7-6 (2).
