Indian man too drunk to wed so brother does
PATNA, India
Villagers at a wedding in eastern India decided the groom had arrived too drunk to get married, and so the bride married the groom's more sober brother instead, police said on yesterday.
"The groom was drunk and had reportedly misbehaved with guests when the bride's family and local villagers chased him away," Madho Singh, a senior police officer told Reuters after Sunday's marriage in a village in Bihar state's Arwal district.
The younger brother readily agreed to take the groom's place beside the teenage bride at her family's invitation, witnesses said.
"The groom apologized for his behavior, but has been crying that word will spread and he will never get a bride again," Singh said by phone.
Muslim space rules
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia
Muslim-majority Malaysia's first astronaut will get guidelines allowing flexibility in praying in zero gravity and eating space meals under Islamic rules, the country space chief said yesterday.
The government-prepared advice is for a Malaysian joining a Russian scientific mission on the International Space Station in October, Malaysia's National Space Agency chief Mazlan Othman told The Associated Press.
Officials have previously said an Islamic code of conduct in space is necessary because few Muslims have embarked on such expeditions, and there have been no standardized guidelines for them.
Malaysia's two finalists for the voyage, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Faiz Khaleed, are now training in Moscow. They were selected from more than 10,000 candidates.
Sudden adult death
BEIJING, China
A Chinese judge charged with corruption died in his cell from "adult sudden death syndrome," Xinhua news agency said on yesterday.
Investigators said Li Chaoyang, 38, had been uncooperative while in detention in Xing'an county in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwestern China. "Cuts on his face and other injuries" had been caused by a fall during an escape attempt, they said.
Li, a judge with the local Pingle County Court, was detained on March 23, accused of taking bribes.
"Li Chaoyang's sudden death conforms with adult sudden death syndrome," said Shi, citing a forensic report.
Li's relatives had claimed there were wounds on his body, a gash across his lip and one of his front teeth was missing. They questioned the cause of his death and wrote about it on a blog.
The investigation found that Li had been "mentally unstable," would not stop shouting and refused to return to his cell after exercise. Investigators said Li had attempted to escape many times and detention center officials had had to shackle him.
Vietnam boat capsizes
HANOI, Vietnam
A boat carrying 24 Vietnamese tourists capsized in the sea off central Vietnam, drowning eight people, an official said yesterday.
The bodies of the eight people, including two women and three children, were recovered hours after the accident Sunday in Da Nang.
The boat was not registered as a tourist vessel but was being used to meet high demand during a public holiday, Thi said, adding that all the tourists on board were Vietnamese. Most of those on board managed to swim to safety or were rescued by fishermen and soldiers.
