Henson named in weakened Wales squad to tour Australia

Gavin Henson was named in Wales' understrength squad Monday for the two-test tour of Australia next month.
Henson has not played since January because of a knee injury, but hopes to start his comeback with club Ospreys on Friday. He was in the 28-man squad named Monday to play against Australia in Sydney on May 26 and Brisbane on June 2.
"I was shocked but delighted to get the phone call this morning, but I'm determined to give 100 percent during this tour," Henson said. "It's been a difficult year for me on the rugby field, but this news has given me a real boost."
Eighteen players have been rested, including Shane Williams, Tom Shanklin, Stephen Jones, Dwayne Peel and Martyn Williams. They'll remain in Wales for a training camp.
Coach Gareth Jenkins said the Australia tour would allow fringe players to prove they should be selected for the World Cup, which runs Sept. 9 to Oct. 20 throughout France, with matches also in Cardiff, Wales, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
"If you're playing well then you are never too old and never too young," Jenkins said. "Selection will be about the here and now, and so those players in possession of the shirts on tour to Australia have every chance of holding on to them.
"There are some players who have not had the opportunity to show us their talents."
Gareth Thomas will captain the team, with Colin Charvis, Michael Owen, Dafydd James and Mefin Davies also providing experience in the squad. Emerging flyhalf James Hook was also named.
