Ireland leaves out entire first-choice lineup for Argentina tour

Ireland left its entire first-choice starting lineup out of its squad to tour Argentina next month to increase its options ahead of the World Cup later this year.
Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan named seven rookies Monday in his 30-man squad to play Argentina on May 26 in Sante Fe City and June 2 in Buenos Aires.
Only lock Mick O'Driscoll has been named from the team that defeated Italy 51-24 in Ireland's last Six Nations match on March 17.
Another lock and Ireland's most capped player, Malcolm O'Kelly, is also in the squad after missing the entire Six Nations with a knee injury.
Former rugby league winger Brian Carney was named in his first Ireland squad after switching codes. Carney left the Gold Coast Titans, his Australian rugby league club, in January and joined Irish rugby team Munster in March.
"Brian has done well for Munster since his arrival and has earned a call into the squad," O'Sullivan said. "He has moved across from league without too much disruption to his game, and I thought this was a good time to move him onto the next level and see how he performs."
The six other rookies are forwards Peter Bracken, Tony Buckley and Shane Jennings, and backs Robert Kearney, Barry Murphy and Tomas O'Leary.
O'Sullivan has also chosen players largely used as substitutes during the last Six Nations, including Simon Best, Jerry Flannery, Isaac Boss, Neil Best and Andrew Trimble.
"This tour was always about looking at options with the World Cup in mind," O'Sullivan said. "It's an opportunity for players to put their cases forward for France and, in doing so, allowed us to rest the majority of the Six Nations squad."
The World Cup runs Sept. 9 to Oct. 20 and is played throughout France, with matches also in Cardiff, Wales, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
