Sanofi-Aventis says FDA approves hyperglycemia treatment for diabetics

Pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis SA said Monday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved SoloSTAR, a disposable insulin pen for the treatment of hyperglycemia in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
The disposable insulin pen offers diabetes patients an alternative to the needle and syringe traditionally used for insulin therapy, Sanofi-Aventis said.
"The introduction of Lantus SoloSTAR offers a convenient option for administering once-daily 24-hour Lantus, the No. 1 prescribed insulin in the world," the company said in a statement.
The disposable pen is expected to be available in pharmacies later this year.
