Chinese official hopes to visit Taiwan

A ranking Chinese official said Monday he hoped the annual economic forum sponsored jointly by the Chinese Communist Party and Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang can be held in the island next year.
Chen Yunlin, director of China's Taiwan Work Office, expressed the wish that his party and the KMT can organize the Cross-strait Trade and Economic Forum in Taiwan.
"Some people in Taiwan always make speeches to demonize the forum," Chen said upon seeing Honorary KMT Chairman Lien Chan off at the airport in Beijing.“The forum has managed to survive and bears fruit each year,”he noted.
Chen sought unsuccessfully to visit Taiwan last year to attend the forum in Taipei. Taiwan government refused to grant Chen and other Chinese officials a travel permit on grounds they failed to go through proper procedure.
